چکیده
Abstract. Oil seed crops, especially oil palm, are among the most rapidly expanding agricultural land uses, and their expansion is known to cause significant environmental damage. Accordingly, these crops often feature in public policy debates which hampered or biased by a lack of accurate information on impacts. In particular, global crop maps remains concern. Recent advances deep-learning remotely sensed data access make it possible address this gap. We present map closed-canopy palm (Elaeis guineensis) plantations typology (industrial versus smallholder plantations) at scale with unprecedented detail (10 m resolution) for year 2019. The DeepLabv3+ model, convolutional neural network (CNN) semantic segmentation, was trained classify Sentinel-1 Sentinel-2 images onto an cover map. characteristic backscatter response stands ability CNN learn spatial patterns, such as harvest road networks, allowed distinction between industrial globally (overall accuracy =98.52±0.20 %), outperforming existing regional datasets that used conventional machine-learning algorithms. user's accuracy, reflecting commission error, smallholders 88.22 ± 2.73 % 76.56 4.53 %, producer's omission 75.78 3.55 86.92 5.12 respectively. layer reveals found 49 countries, covering mapped area 19.60 Mha; estimate 21.00 0.42 Mha (72.7 27.3 plantations). Our analysis confirms variation ratio growers, but also that, from typical development perspective, large areas legally defined resemble industrial-scale plantings. Palm oil production through sustainable plantations
The Malaysian oil palm industry is one of the most highly organised sectors of any national agriculture system of the world. Today, though, the focus has shifted to how well agriculture also meets universally accepted standards of sustainability. This paper highlights the development of oil palm cultivation and responsible farming practices in Malaysia, the world’s largest producer of palm oil....
متن کاملCarbon emissions from forest conversion by Kalimantan oil palm plantations
Oil palm supplies >30% of world vegetable oil production1. Plantation expansion is occurring throughout the tropics, predominantly in Indonesia, where forests with heterogeneous carbon stocks undergo high conversion rates2–4. Quantifying oil palm’s contribution to global carbon budgets therefore requires refined spatio-temporal assessments of land cover converted to plantations5,6. Here, we rep...
متن کاملPalm oil plantation waste handling by smallholder and the correlation with the land fire
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: From August to October 2019, several provinces in Sumatra and Kalimantan had faced severe forest fires, causing thousands of citizens to suffer respiratory disorders. This study aims to assess waste handling in palm oil plantation manage by smallholders and the correlation palm oil plantation waste handling with the fireland in Sumatera, especially on...
متن کاملStatus of Rat Infestation and Recent Control Strategies in Oil Palm Plantations in Peninsular Malaysia
A survey was carried out to establish the status of rat infestation and recent rat control practices in oil palm plantations in Peninsular Malaysia. Rattus tiomanicus (Miller) constitutes a major rat species (68%), followed by Rattus argentiventer (Robinson and Kloss), (46%) and Rattus rattus diardii (L.), (28%). Although 75% of estates did not consider rats as a serious problem, the damage est...
متن کاملGenetic Linkage Map of a High Yielding FELDA Deli×Yangambi Oil Palm Cross
Enroute to mapping QTLs for yield components in oil palm, we constructed the linkage map of a FELDA high yielding oil palm (Elaeis guineensis), hybrid cross. The parents of the mapping population are a Deli dura and a pisifera of Yangambi origin. The cross out-yielded the average by 8-21% in four trials all of which yielded comparably to the best current commercial planting materials. The highe...
